Winnie is Moe, beating up her sisters who can’t do anything right. He’s pretty much a complete throwaway alongside his parents (Charles Rocket, Stephanie Faracy), but since he’s usually in the middle of doing something exciting or interacting with other characters who are far more interesting, his presence isn’t a huge dealbreaker. He’s not sympathetic or likeable. One theory is that the term is a corruption of hax pax max Deus adimax, a pseudo-Latin phrase used in the early 17th century as a magical formula by conjurors. Please, however, respect other theatre goers who are enjoying these films for the first time in decades on the screen and don’t have loud “living-room” style conversation in the theatre. Following the intriguing, well put together first scene set in the 1690s, almost all of the action takes place over the course of one evening. When we first meet them, they’re coaxing a beautiful little girl to her death. In extended usage, the term is often used (pejoratively) to describe irrational human activities that appear to depend on magic. The two-pronged offering makes the women constantly watchable, and helps keep the momentum up, which is probably the main reason why the film is still routinely watched nineteen years after it was released.
